L’altra faccia del cartone.
La scelta del cartone come materiale con cui realizzare i propri oggetti per Angelo Lussiana è stata cosa fortuita: le intenzioni di quel tempo, anno 2011, erano di riprendere la lavorazione del legno, sua passione lungo tutta la vita; senonché, di fronte allo scarso tempo a disposizione per realizzare dei segnaposto per il pranzo di Natale, cercando una soluzione, si è ritrovato tra le mani uno scatolone di cartone.
Da allora è stata una continua scoperta delle proprietà di tale materiale: “lo sai fragile e te lo ritrovi estremamente resistente: il cartone è in realtà un materiale robusto. Ha insita nella sua struttura la formula della sua robustezza: l’onda, il particolare nascosto che amo esporre, tirare fuori, mettere in luce ruotando di 90° e accostando ogni singolo profilo; questo processo, inoltre, rende gli oggetti talmente robusti da potervici far passare sopra un’auto.
Non lo adotteresti per la sua rigidità e rugosità, poi scopri che può regalarti superfici flessibili e vellutate: la trasformazione del foglio in un altro materiale, il “tessuto di cartone”, mi ha permesso la realizzazione di borsette che nulla hanno da temere dal confronto per portabilità con quelle in pelle o stoffa.”
Il processo costruttivo è prevalentemente manuale: solo il taglio è quasi sempre a controllo numerico per la necessaria precisione di ogni particolare. Tutta la fase dell’assemblaggio e della finitura, invece, può solo esser realizzata a mano, dedicandoci parecchie ore per rifinire la superficie di ogni singolo oggetto, carteggiandola per renderla uniforme e morbida, e per liberare ogni onda dai residui di carteggiatura.
The other side of cardboard.
Angelo Lussiana's choice of cardboard as the material with which to make his objects was a fortuitous one: at the time, in 2011, he intended to take up woodworking again, which had been his lifelong passion; but when he realised that he didn't have enough time to make some reindeer place cards for his Christmas lunch, looking for a solution, he was handed a cardboard box.
Since then it has been a continuous discovery of the properties of this material: "you know it's fragile and you find it extremely resistant: cardboard is actually a robust material, it has the formula for its robustness inherent in its structure. The wave, the hidden detail that I love to expose, to bring out, to bring to light: I rotate the cardboard by 90°, placing each single profile side by side, and this makes the objects so strong that it is possible to drive a car over them.
You wouldn't use it because of its rigidity and roughness, but then you discover that it can give you flexible and velvety surfaces: the transformation of the sheet into another material, "cardboard fabric", has allowed me to make handbags that have nothing to fear in terms of portability compared to those made of leather or fabric".
The manufacturing process is mainly manual: except for the cutting, which is almost always numerically controlled for the necessary precision of every detail, the entire assembly and finishing phase can only be done by hand. It takes hours to sand the surfaces of each object to make them uniform and soft, and then to free each wave of sanding residue.
